MLK {2018}

Monday, January 15, 2018
Today we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. and the legacy he left behind. For many it is a day of service but today I took a different approach to our normal celebration. With so much happening in our current political climate, I thought my day would be better served supporting black business, spreading some joy, and donating to a few good causes. I decided to embrace some #blackgirlmagic and #blackboyjoy 😄

At the beginning of 2018, I participated in a “Pay it Forward” initiative where I get to surprise 5 (in my case 6) people with some type of gift, at some point in the year as an effort to spread love and kindness. They volunteer to play along and extend the invitation to 5 more people, and so on and so forth.  Today I bought my first set of gifts from webuyblack.com for one of my lucky friends. I was so excited that I bought more and then went onto amazonsmile and started buying books from black authors, among other items where a percent of my purchase goes to (black) charities of my choice.

After that, I spent some time with my family to remind myself of the infinite hope that is at the core of us all -- through the eyes of our future kings and queens. The next generation is watching us, so what we do now is more important than ever.
