Black History Month {2016}

Monday, February 1, 2016

Today is the first day of Black History Month and in a time where racism is becoming a prominent part of a trending conversation and we continue to shout #blacklivesmatter to all that need to hear it, this month holds so much significance. One of my favorites quotes, that I feel really embodies the importance of remembering those who have helped shape our culture and the spirit of Black History Month states:

“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.
I plan to take time this month on my blog and in real life to celebrate and shed light on the often-neglected accomplishments of so many black Americans.  To tell the history that has made me and hopefully enlighten and educate others. Today I'm starting off sharing some facts about the observance that I find interesting:
  • Black History Month started in 1926 as Negro History Week before it was expanded to the full month of February and recognized by the US Government in 1976.
  • Black History Month is celebrated in the United Kingdom and Canada (not just in the U.S.).
  • We need to thank Dr. Carter Woodson for the study of black history he established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now referred to as the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) and helped found Negro History Week.
  • February holds several significant dates in black history including the birthdays of W.E.B. Dubois and Frederick Douglass; the passing of the 15th Amendment; the formation of the NAACP; and the assassination of Malcolm X.
